ST PATRICKS DAY!

“St. Patrick’s Day is an enchanted time – a day to begin transforming winter’s dreams into summer’s magic.” –Adrienne Cook

Next Monday  17th of March will be St. Patrick’s day, drinking beer, dressing in green and listening Irish songs is what foreigners know about St. Patrick’s day, but why do we celebrate it? And what is the real meaning of this day in our calendar?

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on the 17th March because that was the day when the Patron Saint of Ireland, St. Patrick died. This day has come to be associated with everything Irish, anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. However for those who celebrate it, St. Patrick’s Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

When St. Patrick was 16 years old, he was captured from his home in Great Britain, and taken as a slave to Ireland, where he lived for six years before he escaped and returned to his family. He decided to become a priest. But he vowed that one day he will return to Ireland, and so he did.

He became a bishop and travelled from town to town tearing down idols and temples establishing the Catholic Church.  He is known for driving the snakes from Ireland, a metaphor of ending with the pagan practice, but surprisingly it’s true that there are no snakes in Ireland! , (but they probably never have been)

Here you have 2 curiosities about St Patrick’s Day:

Why Irish use the 3 leaf clover as a symbol?, well it is believed that St. Patrick used the 3 leaved plant to explain the Trinity of the Christian religion.

Green wasn’t walkways associated with this day, the original colour was blue!! If you want to find out more information about why they have changed the colour have a look to this short video!

World Choice Education would like to be part of the celebrations, and we are going to go to an Irish pub to enjoy this day and we want you to get involved with us!

We will go to O’Neils Pub in Bournemouth on Monday 17th March at 5 pm we will enjoy the traditional music, dance and of course Irish beer!  Click here to Join the event!
