STUDY ABROAD

1. KNOW THE WORLD AND EXTEND YOUR PERSPECTIVE

There is lots of amazing things to experience in this world. You can visit, and see different landscapes as well as weather that do not exist in your home country. There are historic places in each country that contributes to the world heritage. You can extend your knowledge of the world just by being there: watching it, touching it and experiencing it.

2. GAIN A NEW PERSPECTIVE OF YOUR OWN COUNTRY

A famous Afro-American writer, wrote ‘From the European perspective, the foreign student discovers his own country’

Learning about your country when you live abroad is extremely important when you discover about other cultures.

There is no better way to see the World than being an international student.

This experience will affect you for the rest of your life and will mean a soul change.

3. EXPLORE YOUR CULTURAL HERITAGE

Being in contact with your family culture can be another motivation to study abroad. Lots of students get personal and educational benefits from exploring new countries where their family has roots, either because their parents were immigrant to these countries or lived there for decades, so the student wants to know about the place where his ancestors started.

So, study abroad can give you an unique opportunity to learn about your own ethnicity and to explore your identity.

4. IMPROVE YOUR PROFESSIONAL AND FINANCIAL POTENTIAL

The experience of studying abroad is an important self sales point in any Curriculum Vitae.

Apart from the personal experience that you will have if you study abroad, the international recognition of studying abroad for sure will increase your possibilities of getting a better job wherever you want to be in the future, either being back in your home country or working in a foreign country.

Another advantage is that being bilingual is almost mandatory for most companies.

5. BE A FULL TIME STUDENT

When you study abroad you have the opportunity of focusing 100% in your studies.

Most of the students who study abroad say that even they learn a lot in their school, college or university, when they most learn is when they are out of the classroom socializing with their friends and knowing for themselves how difficult is to be on your own in a foreign country and what really matters in life.

6. DISCOVER NEW CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES FROM YOUR NEW FRIENDS

It is very common that some friends you will make whilst you are living abroad will be some of the most important people in your life from then onwards.

You will have the opportunity of meeting new people from lots of different countries, cultures, ethnicities… and some of them will remain your friend forever.

They will support and offer you their friendship. These friendships, perspectives and adventures are an important part of your experience of living and studying abroad.

7. WHEN YOU LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR CULTURE, YOU WILL FIGHT AGAINST THE STEREOTYPES REGARDING TO YOUR CULTURE

Being a foreign student can be a challenge. What most people think they know about another culture or country is what they see on TV, in films, on the radio… etc…because of this it’s possible that lots of students feel frustrated when they find out what the perception is of that hosting country, And what they think about them and the people from their countries. However these students should not be scared of these stereotypes and ideas, as it is a good opportunity to teach and show others who you really are as individual and how your ethnic group actually is.

In this way you will contribute to the knowledge and understanding of the world’s diversity all across the world.

8. YOU WILL CHANGE YOUR OWN MIND

There is a quote that says ‘The men who travel should leave their prejudices at home’

When you are open minded you have the opportunity of meeting new people that you may have never imagined that you could meet and share with them your feelings and thoughts from your own perspective of your culture, their culture, worldwide matters and other subjects. You can even discover different perspectives on some issues when you listen to a different point of view!

9. TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR FUTURE

In the meantime that you are abroad, you will have countless experiences which will make an impact on your life. Sometimes, after being back from studying abroad, the students change their career due to the experience in the country where they have studied. Others discover how marvellous it is travelling around the world and decide to go somewhere else to work and learn another language.

  1. it is nice if you can study abroad. But I think, too many employers ask for it, and you don’t really have a choice nowadays! You need to study abroad! But: What if you cannot afford it, life is expensive and many people do not have the possibility to study, let alone go abroad! And let’s face it, the economic situation is not great either, therefore I do not believe you will find a better situation if you study abroad. However, I don’t think you need to go abroad, to have a better understanding for another culture. Unfortunately many people study in order to get a good job, although they are not interested in another cultures or being tolerant! Therefore we have to consider, why someone studies abroad, and keep in mind that only those who are already wealthy can do it!

A very good article covering not only obvious aspects of ctudying abroad (like career prospectives), but especially emphasizing the changes happening in the mind and attitudes to other cultures and even your own. Worth taking into consideration, thank you!
