What Education means to me

Education is not about regurgitating facts from a book; it’s about inspiring one’s mind. Spending every second at school and college memorizing equations, facts and dates, written down to the letter, half of which I’d never remember, and half of which I forget straight after the exam. But are you aware that examiners have a check list? And if your answer is outside the box, the automatic response is a cross, because nothing can change the results at the end of the day. Those 5 important minutes you spent before class revising from the creased notes tucked away, at the bottom of your bag was the only ‘revision’ you did for your finals. That page you skim read and all those classes you sat blank minded could have potentially determined your future based on one final exam.

Your education decides whether you can get a J-O-B; or in fact a career. Because the difference between a job and a career is that a J-O-B leaves you just over broke every single month, living your life just for the weekend, living life just on the weekend because the other five days belong to your manager.  You see, there’s a big difference between a J-O-B and a career, because in the career no matter how many hours you work, you do it for the satisfaction, but in a job you do it for the salary. Some of you might even have the nerve to say, ‘I don’t do it for the money’. So what are you studying for? To work for a charity, you need more clarity!

You can’t just automatically be successful academically in the accepted sense but one has to build on their education to become close. How many times have you remembered something 5 minutes after the examiner said, ‘stop writing’! Only to receive your results one month later, to realise you were only one mark short off the top grade. But does that mean if you remembered 5 minutes earlier, it would have made you more qualified for a particular job? A job is surviving not living. Cory Carter said it best, ‘9 – 5’ is how to survive and I’m not trying to survive’. He strived forward and now look at him. Do not take this as a reason to jack in your job in for educational purposes because ‘success’ will not just fall in your lap. And becoming a slave to money is the least of your worries. So please don’t become a slave to a pay check as a job is just a safety net. There is nothing wrong with making an honest living, but be honest, are you honestly living? An education isn’t how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It’s being able to differentiate between what you know and what you don’t. Now we just have to have the will – the energy – to make this happen…and believe me, we have it.
